Serralves em Festa 2024

May 30, 2024

In recent years, Porto has undergone a significant transformation in various aspects. The city has gained an international reputation as a top tourist destination, receiving the prestigious "Best Destination City in Europe 2022" award. It has also invested in improving its infrastructure by expanding the Metro network, restoring and refurbishing many spaces, and experiencing a rise in the hotel industry and local guesthouses. The historic Bolhão Market (in Portuguese, Mercado do Bolhão) has been revived, and the "Grande Porto" project, a joint effort between Porto, Matosinhos, and Gaia, aims to promote the region as a unique destination and attract investment. Moreover, the city has some of the best venues for showcasing national and international culture, as well as emerging trends. Porto is not only welcoming to outsiders but also embraces diversity and innovation.

An unmissable place to visit in Porto is the Fundação de Serralves, a cultural institution that is widely recognized for its modern outlook on Art and Landscape. It is considered to be one of the most important cultural institutions in Portugal and the most significant one in the northern region of the country. The entire area is a genuine architectural and landscape heritage, comprising the Manoel de Oliveira Museum and Cinema House, designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning architect Álvaro Siza in 1992, the Serralves House, a unique example of Art Deco architecture, and its renowned Serralves Park, designed by Jacques Gréber, a French architect who won the "Henry Ford Prize for the Preservation of the Environment" in 1997. Recently, a Treetop Walkway has been added, which is a raised walkway at the level of the treetops, a feature that can be seen in some of the world's most famous parks.

This is where one of the most eagerly awaited cultural events of the year takes place, Serralves em Festa. This event is free to enter and is considered the biggest contemporary culture event in Portugal and one of the biggest in Europe. With hundreds of activities taking place in various venues, this event helps to promote not only Portugal internationally but also culture in general, as well as practices linked to the environment and landscaping. The event's program encompasses multiple artistic strands, including performing arts, visual arts, music (from jazz to experimental, including world music and sound installations), dance, theater (street theater, children's theater, puppet theater), new circus, video cinema, and literature. The event will run for 50 uninterrupted hours, starting on May 31 and ending on June 2.
