A Taste of Tradition: Exploring Porto’s Local Shops

Chocolataria Equador
To begin this adventure, we have Chocolataria Equador. A true haven for chocolate lovers, this store offers an irresistible experience that appeals to our senses. This traditional chocolate shop, located in the heart of Porto, is known for its intricately crafted chocolates and the high quality of its products. Made with cocoa of unique origin, they stand out for their purity of flavor and attention to detail, making this chocolate shop a must for anyone looking for an unforgettable experience in the heart of Porto. From all four stores in the city, we recommend the one on Flores Street (in Portuguese, Rua das Flores).

Claus Porto
Another store that deserves our attention, for all its history, tradition, and everything it has contributed to the city of Porto is Claus Porto. Established in 1887, this renowned luxury soap store has a rich heritage, with an artisanal approach to its work. Set in a historic building in the city center, this perfumery and cosmetics house has gained international renown for the exceptional quality of its products and artistically designed packaging. Visitors can explore a variety of fine soaps, exclusive fragrances, and exquisite personal care items. To visit this stunning place, you must go to the renowned Flores Street (Rua das Flores), where the shop is open every day from 10 am to 7 pm.

O Pretinho do Japão
One place that is iconic, dazzling, and portrays the true metamorphosis of the passing of time in Porto is perhaps the store O Pretinho do Japão. This space, a two-in-one, opened its doors in 1947, offering a variety of regional products, from wines to canned goods, including codfish, and even several products related to coffee and its grinding (one of its specialties). At the rear of the store, you’ll find an exquisite restaurant and cafeteria with a terrace, hosting a wide range of events related to gastronomy, culture, music, arts, and entertainment. This place can be found at Bonjardim Street 496 (in Portuguese, Rua do Bonjardim), and is open from Monday to Saturday, from 9 am to 7 pm. It is closed on Sundays.

Centro Comercial Bombarda
In a very popular street with an important artistic presence throughout the city, is the Bombarda Shopping Center (in Portuguese, Centro Comercial Bombarda). Set in the heart of Porto, this unique landmark combines fashion, art, and design in a culturally enriched environment. Founded in 2007, this contemporary and vibrant space is home to a variety of independent stores, contemporary art galleries, design ateliers, and coffee shops, creating a rich and inspiring environment for everyone who visits it. More than just a shopping center, Bombarda is a meeting point for creativity, delivering a unique shopping experience that highlights local talent and cultural diversity in Porto’s urban panorama.

Garrafeira do Carmo
And finally, if what makes you smile is the taste of a good wine, brimming with quality, then Porto is one of the best, if not the best destinations to visit. An excellent example of this is Garrafeira do Carmo, a store dedicated to all wine lovers looking for a sophisticated and unique experience. Housed in a historic building, this store stands out for its wide selection of Portuguese wines, carefully chosen to represent the diversity and quality of wine production. This store also offers a variety of Port wines, liqueurs, alcoholic spirits, and gourmet products, nourishing an atmosphere that celebrates Portugal’s winemaking and gastronomic traditions. This store, founded in 1990 and featured in many international guides on how to appreciate good wine, is located on Carmo Street (in Portuguese, Rua do Carmo) and is open Monday to Friday from 9 am to 7 pm (closed during lunch break, from 1 pm to 2 pm), on Saturdays from 9 am to 1 pm, and it is closed on Sundays.
