New Year’s Eve in Portugal is celebrated with great importance, marking the end of one year and renewed hope for the next. To make the most of what we have in the north of Portugal, we’re focusing on four different areas: Braga, Guimarães, Viana do Castelo, and Ponte de Lima.
New Year’s Eve in Northern Portugal: Embracing the Magic of December 31st
Braga, located in the north of Portugal, is a city rich in history and culture. Dating back to Roman times, Braga boasts a remarkable architectural heritage, including the majestic Braga Cathedral and the Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary, with its iconic baroque staircase. To celebrate New Year’s Eve, the city of Braga will be organizing two concerts on Avenida Central, with the first taking place on December 31st and starting at 10:30 pm, and the second on January 1st, starting at 3 pm.
The city of Guimarães, often referred to as the “Cradle of Portugal,” is a historically significant and charming city in the north of Portugal. Recognized for its crucial role in shaping the country, Guimarães has a historic center classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In addition to its historical importance, this city offers a vibrant atmosphere with charming stores, restaurants, and terraces. For the New Year’s Eve party, there is a concert on December 31st, starting at 10 pm and ending at 4 am, in Largo do Toural, and the second on January 1st, starting at 5 pm, where you can enjoy the Guimarães Orchestra in the Francisca Abreu Grand Auditorium of the Vila Flor Cultural Center, for €7.50 per person.
On the northern coast of Portugal, Viana do Castelo is a charming city known for its rich history, elegant architecture, and stunning coastal landscape. With a warm and colorful atmosphere, the historic center stands out for its narrow streets, lively squares, and colorful buildings. For New Year’s Eve, you can look forward to a concert starting at 11.30 pm in Largo das Neves, lasting throughout the night. At midnight, you can look forward to the famous fireworks that will delight everyone.
