Climate

The climate in Portugal is Mediterranean and is one of the most mild in Europe: the annual average temperature in mainland  varies from 4°C (39.º F) to 18°C (64.º F) in the mountainous interior in the north. Summers are mild in northern highlands and by the coast. Autumns and winters are typically windy, rainy and cool with colder temperatures in the north and center of the country where negative temperatures occur during the colder months.

Normally the months of spring and summer are sunny and temperatures are high in July and August and may occasionally pass 40 °C (104.ºF) in the majority of the country, in extreme days, and more frequently in Alentejo region.

Currency

The euro is the currency used by 18 of the 28 member states of the European Union, including Portugal.

Travelers who need to change money can do it in several places. Airports and banks are usually the safest places to carry out the exchange.

In Portugal there is a huge network of ATM's scattered all over the country. But card payments are the best and safest way to shop and also avoids having large sums of money in the wallet. The maximum you can withdraw per day is around 200 € (276$ / 165&) and requires dialing a 4-digit PIN code. So before you travel be sure to check your code in you bank.

Time Zone

Portugal (Mainland and Madeira) is in the Western European Time Zone. Western European Standard Time (WET) is Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

Like most states in Europe, Summer (Daylight-Saving) Time is observed in Portugal, where the time is shifted forward by 1 hour;  1 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT+1).

After the Summer months the time is shifted back by 1 hour to Western European Time (WET) or (GMT).

Power and Energy

Voltage: 220 V; Plugs C & F. You will need a voltage converter, and plug adapter in order to use U.S. appliances. We recommend getting a universal adapter and converter kit.
