Where to eat?

Portugal has a great gastronomy, which is the result of its history and the people who passed through this region and left their mark. The intrinsic qualities of the soil, the Mediterranean climate and proximity to the sea are factors that further enriched the Portuguese cuisine. The period of the Discoveries was equally important as eating habits introduced new flavors such as potatoes, beans as well as spices from the Orient.

All peoples who inhabited the territory that is now called Portugal (Phoenicians, Greeks, Celts, Romans, Visigoths, Moors, amongst others) always left their influences in the population and today ensues in a unique and diverse cuisine. Each region has a unique and varied cuisine based on its history, geography and natural resources.

Portuguese cuisine is based mainly on Mediterranean heritage (bread, oil and wine) but also tasty meats and fresh fish (Portugal is the third largest consumer of fish in the world, behind Iceland and Japan), shellfish, and typical desserts.

The restaurants also follows the same principle and today we have taverns (‘tascas’) with typical cuisine and traditional dishes but also Michelin starred restaurants that fuse basics of Portuguese cuisine with modern innovations. Whatever your choice will be, you’ll always have an unforgettable experience!

These are some typical dishes and products in Portugal:

Fish

The most consumed fishes are mackerel, sardines (especially during the summer) and sea bass. But nobody loves cod ("The Faithful Friend") as the Portuguese. Although it is a major ingredient in Portuguese cuisine, cod is mainly imported from the cold waters of the North Atlantic - Canada and Norway. It is said that there are ways to make this fish for each day of the year!

Meat

Meat based dishes are very diverse across the country, however there are two regions famous for their specialties: the Alentejo, regarding to pig, and Trás-os-Montes, in the North with excellent sausages. One of the most popular dishes is the Portuguese Stew (Cozido à Portuguesa) which blends different types of meat, vegetables and sausages. Other meats such as lamb , duck or veal are also greatly appreciated. There are also various DOP meats (Protected Origin Meats) across the country.

Bread and Cheese

Each region features a specific type of bread and cheese. One of the most famous is the Queijo da Serra, originally from Serra da Estrela. Queijo de Nisa and Serpa (Alentejo) and Azeitão (near Lisbon) are also delicious. All restaurants put a basket of bread on the table as appetizer, usually with cheese and butter. The bread is usually homemade or produced in a nearby bakery.

Desserts

Many Portuguese pastries are a legacy of the Arab occupation, especially in the Algarve but also based in ancient recipes from convents. It is common to eat sweet desserts like rice pudding, custard , ‘baba de camelo’, crême brulée, soft eggs or custard tart, which usually accompanies an expresso coffee.

Wines

Portugal is especially famous for its fortified wines: Port wine and Madeira wine, both excellent as appetizers or digestives. However, the wine culture and tradition are located throughout the country. Douro region became one of the best in the world thanks to its wines and protected areas. The regions of Alentejo and Dão also produce magnificent red, white and rosé wines. You can enjoy truly fascinating wines tastings across the country!
